A U.S. F-1 Student Visa not only allows international students to study at SEVP-approved institutions but also opens up several employment pathways during and after their education. While studying, F-1 students can work on-campus for up to 20 hours per week during academic sessions and full-time during breaks. After completing one academic year, students become eligible for Curricular Practical Training (CPT), which allows them to take internships or training programs directly related to their field of study. Additionally, students can apply for Optional Practical Training (OPT), which permits up to 12 months of full-time work after graduation (or even during studies if used part-time). For STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) graduates, there is a further 24-month OPT extension, giving them up to 36 months of work authorization in the U.S. These work options help students gain real-world experience, build professional networks, and even transition to long-term employment under work visa categories like H-1B.
